Join the group to build the Prusa 3D printer!

The MakerGear (www.makergear.com) Prusa 3D printer has arrived.  Reverse Space is setting up a group to build the Prusa.  The date and time is still to be determined based on the number of people interested in assembling the printer and when we all can meet.  There is no cost to join the group to build this printer. The instructions are all online to assembling it and we have all of the parts.

If the members are happy with this build, we would like to build another open source 3D printer www.PrintRbot.com. Most of the parts to this low cost printer ($300) can be printed on our 3D printers.  If you want to build your own 3D printer for your own home, you are welcome and we will be happy to help.  For more information on joining the team to build the printer, please communicate at our Google groups at http://groups.google.com/group/ReverseSpace

New Reverse Space RepRap 3-D printer builder group

New MakerGear (www.makergear.com) parts to build a Prusa 3D printer Mendel has been donated to the space and should arrive soon.  This kit will allow an entire operational Prusa Mendel printer to be built. This concept is unique because it enables anyone to build their own 3D printer for around 5% percent of the cost of a commercial 3-D printer. This group will work on both finding common parts to improve the printer’s operation, building or constructing parts for other printers to be built, and any other ideas and concepts members have. At this point in time the cost for membership to this group is free of charge until a core group of volunteers is established.

The RepRap is an open source hardware
concept to build and design 3D printers from common materials
(http://reprap.org/wiki/RepRap).

The MakerBot Replicator dual color 3D printer has arrived. http://www.makerbot.com/

This Thursday 4/5/12 see and operate the new 3-D printer.  The Replicator arrived last week and we have printed several test parts to make sure the printer is working correctly.  Two great internet sites for 3-D designs are www.thingiverse.com and www.shapeways.com. Thingiverse.com has free 3-D designs and www.shapeways.com has some of the most talented 3-D designers and artists in the country.

3-D printed metal Reverse Space is starting a new 3-D
printer group and we are looking for team leaders and volunteers! We have several hi-tech 3-D printed items for people to look at who are interested in 3-D printing. We will also be printing items on a z-corp color powder printer.   www.zcorp.com

Reverse Space bought a gold metal
plated ($10 in gold) 3-D printed pendant designed from the game Skyrim, and seven 3-D printed samples using different printers.  We
have the specs for all of the different materials including Strength, Flexibility, Detail, Surface smoothness, Texture, and level of Transparency.

Reverse Space is also happy to be soon
receiving a donated MakerBot Industries “Replicator” 3-D printer with dual printed heads for printing with two colors and a faster
build.

See www.makerbot.com
for more details.

New Hours

Reverse Space’s Open house is now every week on Thursday
from 6pm to 10pm.

“Disposable one time use computer” project.

Wednesday 2/15/12 6pm to 8 pm Reverse Space will be opening a new “eeeBox EB1012P” PC made by Asus.  These types of computers are becoming common in the workplace do to their green status by using only an average of 20 watts of power.  Their low power allows them to be used for mobile computing (War Driving) or the new concept of “disposable one time use computer.”  This was inspired by a talk at 2012 Shmoocon in Washington, DC Sacrificial Computing for Land and Sky – Brendan O’Connor.

The “Disposable one time use computer” is a new project Reverse Space it starting.  Feel free to join in. All are welcome.  We need Linux members to install wireless protocol analyzers, WireShark (http://www.wireshark.org/), and electronic and hardware people who may know how to run this CPU on battery power (No off the shelve UPS since they are too heavy and big).

Reverse Space will unboxing the computer and opening it up to see what’s inside and what improvement can be made such as SSD, DDR, weight, size, and power reduction options.

Upcoming Events

Don’t forget.. tomorrow (Thursday night) is a ‘Car Hacking Meeting’
with special guests Emmanuel Goldstein & Deker from Battelle Institue.

Friday night is the ReverseSpace Halloween Party.

“For the Halloween Party on the 28th, it would be great if people can
bring beer, soda and mixers. Believe it or not, we still have liquor
left over from last year’s party. How can this be?! Good thing it
doesn’t go bad (but the quality we have doesn’t improve with age,
either).

Packet Party Moved..

In order to allow those that might want to go to the Car Hacking
meeting to be able to attend both events, we’ve moved/rescheduled the
Packet Party to November 3rd. Again, the event is open to everyone
and this time we will be working on more Malware Analysis then simple
packet capture challenges.

Agendas to go over:
1- Creating the VMs (VirtualBox and VMware)
2- Tools and examples
3- Miscellany (can go over APIs, or simply use this as a time for practice)

Packet Party Review

I just realized I hadn’t made a post about the packet part a few weeks back.  We had a good number of people show up and we got through most of the weeks challenges pretty quickly.  DaKahuna mentioned this great tool called NetworkMiner. It really helped us cut through the challeneges much quicker then trying to do it manually in Wireshark and CLI tools.  It’s almost better then the free version of NetWitness

I’ve archived the challanges and put the up here and the challenges we just had are here and the ones from the previous month are here

Game night review!

So game night last night was a success.  We had about 6-8 classic gamers and another 8-10 PC gamers including about 4 or 5 new faces.  We played some Steam games (L4D2, TF2 and Defcon) and some OpenArena and a few other games.  Ted even set up the projector to show his screen as we played; so everyone saw how often he died.  :-)  Next classic gaming night is in two weeks and the next LAN party will be in 4 weeks.
